Arif Khan (Banking Professional) Dhaka Bangladesh MD and CEO IDLC Finance Ltd

Arif Khan is the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of IDLC Finance Limited, the largest NBFI of Bangladesh.

Early Education and Career

Arif is an cost management accountant and had his masters from Finance department of University of Dhaka. Later, he did MBA from Institute of Business Administration, University of Dhaka. He also holds an CFA charter. He joined as probationary officer in AB Bank Limited in 1991. Then he worked in British American Tobacco and Beximco Fisheries Limited for a brief period. After that, he joined IDLC Finance Limited as Senior Officer in 1996.

Career at IDLC

Arif was instrumental in IDLCs overall business success and becoming countries leading NBFI. Arif played the role of CFO, Head of Treasury and eventually became DMD of the company. He started various departments like Deposit Operation and SME which played the pivotal role in IDLCs business growth. After almost 15 years of dedicated service in IDLC, he resigned and joined as Commissioner of Bangladesh Securities & Exchange Commission in 2010.

He led the reform initiatives as a capital market regulator including stock market demutualization, corporate governance code for public limited companies, public issue rules, listing regulations, equity research rules etc. He left Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission in 2016.

Rejoining at IDLC as MD & CEO

Arif rejoined IDLC in 2016 as Managing and CEO. After his joining, IDLC became the highest profit making NBFI of the country under his leadership. Even amid the Covid-19 pandemic, IDLC made the highest profit of Tk253 crore in its 35-year history. The company has been maintaining a mere 2-3% default loan ratio in his five years tenure even after lending at higher rates.The average non-performing loan ratio in the NBFI industry was above 9% in 2020, while that in the banking sector was over 10%.

Recently, Arif Khan has decided to step down as the managing director and chief executive officer of IDLC Finance Ltd as he plans to launch his own business. His resignation will effect from 1st April 2021.

Apart from his professional career, Mr. Khan is a Fellow Member (FCMA) of the Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB), where he occupied the role of the president until recently. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Charter and is member of the CFA Institute, USA. He was the Founding President of Bangladesh CFA Society and Bangladesh Merchant Bankers’ Association (BMBA).
