Arise from Darkness is an American art house paranormal, thriller drama that premiered at Film Invasion L.A film festival as When my Eyes go Dark, its original title.[1] The film was written by and starred Zachary Laoutides.[2][3] The film claims to be the first to use electronic voice phenomena (EVP) recorded by the Archdiocese of Detroit.[4][5][6]

Premise[edit]

The story is based on events surrounding Lazaro Ruben Torres, a neighborhood psychic who assisted the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit to investigate the paranormal. Torres discovers his psychic abilities after his daughter is killed, and then uses these abilities to discover her murderer.[7] The film uses electronic voices of phenomena (EVP) recorded by the Archdiocese during exorcisms to narrate the movie.[8][9]

Cast[edit]

Production[edit]

The film is set in Detroit, and its production was completed in Chicago on June 15, 2015 by Ave Fenix Pictures. It is the second film from executive producer Mónica Esmeralda León and writer and actor Zachary Laoutides.[10][11] The film was scored in Glasgow and Manchester United Kingdom.[12][13]

Release[edit]

Arise from Darkness was the first film to open FILA (Film Invasion Los Angeles) 2016.[14] The film was released in US theaters and worldwide by Indican Pictures on January 16, 2017.[15][6] On the first month of its premiere, IndieWire listed Arise from Darkness as one of the 20 independent films with the highest profits in 2017.[16] Arise from Darkness was later released to Redbox through Lionsgate Films.[17]

Reception[edit]

The film received a four-star review from Inquisitr, saying it had "solid performances".[18] The Levity Ball noted how the film "develops layered storylines, showing commentary on the dangers of occultism and the manipulation of the innocent."[19] Ain't It Cool News also reviewed the movie, calling it "a somewhat dark and fascinating art house tale of the possibility of not only life after death, but also the presence of both God and the Devil."[20]
