Species

Aristaeella is a genus of Gram-negative, obligately anaerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, rod-shaped bacteria in the family Aristaeellaceae.[2] Its two described species were originally isolated from the rumen of a sheep and a cow.[2]

Members of the genus ferment various sugars and plant polysaccharides, including xylan and pectin, but do not degrade crystalline cellulose. Their major fermentation products include acetate, lactate, hydrogen, and ethanol.[2]

Taxonomy

The genus was described in 2023, together with the family Aristaeellaceae. Its type species is Aristaeella hokkaidonensis.[2][1] The name Aristaeella refers to Aristaeus, a figure in Greek mythology associated with animal husbandry and the production of alcoholic beverages.[2]

As of 2026, the genus contains two validly published species:[1]
