Arkbound
Arkbound is the name of a publisher and charity based in the United Kingdom. Formed as a social enterprise in 2015, Arkbound publishes books and magazines and the Arkbound Foundation is "a UK charity that is concerned with improving accessibility and diversity within both publishing and journalism".[1]
History[edit]
Arkbound started in Bristol, South West England, as a small social enterprise in 2015[2]. The social enterprise mission of Arkbound is described as "supporting social inclusion, community development and environmental sustainability".[3] It published a regional magazine called Boundless with a focus on the environment, community and local arts.[4] In May 2017 the Arkbound Foundation was registered with the UK Charity Commission and Arkbound is represented as the trading arm of this body.[5][6]
Today Arkbound has other offices in Glasgow (UK), Lisbon (Portugal) and Athens (Greece), working with English-speaking publication Athens Live.[7][8] Arkbound runs a literary award called the "Zooker" (for new disadvantaged authors) and an annual writing competition.[9][10] The Arkbound Foundation runs a project that seeks to 'help aspiring journalists from disadvantaged backgrounds start their own media outlets' along with creative writing workshops and mentoring.[11]
Notable publications[edit]
- Just Sky by Stephen Jackley, a true crime memoir which resulted in an article within the Sunday Times newspaper and other media coverage[12]
- Lyrically Justified by Urban World Collective, a collection of urban word poetry, with performances across the UK on BBC radio and at events (a second volume has now been published featuring 42 contributors)[13][14]
- Boundless, which is a quarterly Bristol magazine that has featured investigations into alleged paranormal activity and an interview with UK graffiti artist Banksy[15]
Controversy[edit]
In January 2017, the Daily Telegraph newspaper ran an article criticising the new UK media regulator IMPRESS for accepting Arkbound as a regulated organisation.[16] Arkbound was one of the first media outlets to be accepted for regulation by IMPRESS and the Telegraph article criticised this because Arkbound was setup by a former prisoner convicted of armed robbery, Stephen Mcnought. Mr Mcnought responded to the Telegraph article arguing that it was inaccurate and attacked the principle of allowing ex-offenders to reintegrate, something under hot debate in the UK.[17]
Achievements and connections[edit]
The publisher Arkbound won Bristol City's "Go Green Awards" in 2016 for Sustainable Travel and Transport.[18] The organisation was one of the 10 media outlets across Europe to receive mentoring under the Council of Europe Accelerating Media Diversity initiative.[19] Arkbound also delivered the UK's first ever National Writing Day, in partnership with UK charity First Story.[20]
