Arkose Labs[edit]

San Mateo-based Arkose Labs™ makes technology to detect and prevent online fraud by protecting consumers from attacks like account takeover, scraping, and fake account creation.[1] Industries served include technology, fintech, gaming, e-commerce/retail, social media, and travel segments. "[1]

Its investors include PayPal, Sony Innovation Fund, US Venture Partners, M12, Wells Fargo Strategic Capital, and SoftBank Vision Fund 2. "[1]

Arkose Labs maintains offices in Brisbane and Sydney, Australia; San Jose, Costa Rica; and London, U.K. "[1]

History[edit]

Kevin Gosschalk and Matthew Ford launched Arkose Labs in 2016 in Brisbane, Australia.[2] In 2017, the company raised $1 million in pre-Series A funding and moved its headquarters to San Francisco. [3]

CNBC selected the company for its Upstart 100 List in 2019. [4]

Arkose Labs also won Best of Show at its Finovate debut at FinovateSpring 2019 “for its technology that solves multi-million-dollar fraud problems for the world’s most targeted businesses with zero impact to user conversion.”[5]

In March 2020, Arkose raised $22 million in Series B funding led by Microsoft’s M12 venture fund. [6] It planned to use the funding to “empower its fight to bankrupt the business of online fraud and abuse.” "[6]

In May 2021, Arkose Labs raised another $70 million in a funding round led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 and Wells Fargo Strategic Capital, bringing its total capital raised to $114 million. [7] It planned to use the funding for platform development, new hires, and global expansion. "[7]

Fast Company named Arkose Labs to its “Next Big Things in Tech 2021” list in the AI & Data category “for foiling both human fraudsters and bots at scale.”[8]

In 2021, the company had doubled in size and also begun work in the Metaverse security space.[9] The company also began work in the metaverse security space. "[9] In August 2021, Arkose Labs announced a warranty for losses up to $1 million against credential stuffing attacks. [10]

Fast Company named Arkose Labs to its “Next Big Things in Tech 2021” list in the AI & Data category “for foiling both human fraudsters and bots at scale.”[8] It was also named the 83rd fastest-growing company in North America on the “2021 Deloitte Fast 500” ranking based on a three-year audited growth rate of 2,010%.[11]

In January 2022, Arkose Labs hired Brett Johnson, a 39-count convicted fraudster who ran the pre-darknet criminal forum ShadowCrew, as its first chief criminal officer.[12] Johnson was hired to help shape intelligence-gathering strategies to generate insights to help make fraud efforts less lucrative for bad actors. [13]

In May 2022, the Banking Tech Awards USA 2022 named the Arkose Labs Fraud Deterrence Platform its winner in the “Tech of the Future” category.[14]

Technology[edit]

The cloud-based Arkose Labs platform is designed to disrupt the economic model of fraud by taking fraudsters’ financial return-on-attack to zero. [15] Its patented platform combines fraud and bot detection with an adaptive step-up challenge. "[15] The system accurately identifies bad actors, while the adaptive step-up wears them down and diminishes their ROI without adding friction for legitimate consumers. "[15]

Arkose Detect is a fraud detection solution designed to provide legitimate users with a streamlined experience.[16]
