Armin Boehm (* 1972 in Aachen) is a german Maler. He lives and works in Berlin.

Life[edit]

Boehm initially attended the Kunstakademie Münster from 1995 and one year later transferred to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he was a student of Konrad Klapheck and a master student of Jörg Immendorff until 2001. In the meantime, Boehm received a scholarship for gifted artists from the Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes (German National Academic Foundation) from 1998 and was able to take up residence at the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris for further training in 2001 with a scholarship from the State Art Academy Düsseldorf. Since then he has been represented at renowned galleries throughout Germany and abroad with solo and group exhibitions.

Work[edit]

Since 2007, Boehm has become known for a series of grim pictures of big city riots (Riots). The first of these images, Genua Riot, can be seen at the [Städel Museum]] in Frankfurt am Main.[1] It was later followed by Tehran Riot (Ray 2010), Istanbul Riot (GEZI 2014), Riot Whattana (2014) and Bangkok Riot (DUSIT 2016), among others.[2]

Since 2011, the paintings have become more colourful. The repertoire of figures in his more recent works pushes into restless feverish pictorial spaces prismatically composed of opaque layers of paint, pieces of paper and fabric, with highly subjective and cultural-historical references. Moments of night-walking, bohemian lifestyle with electrifying bar and club atmospheres determine his pictorial content just as much as body cult and esotericism, which he contrasts with fragile floral still lifes symbolising sexuality. The scenes, hypnotically charged with set pieces from the world of pop and fashion, are characterised by deep emotionality and a contemporary attitude to life. At the centre is the question of the current definition and location of contemporary man in the social context.

Boehm symbolises contemporary individualism not only with his formal language, but also by integrating historically relevant or subjectively fleeting references. References to fixed genre arts serve Boehm's investigations to build up relational networks of ciphers and symbols that serve him to integrate mechanisms of reception, from thematic complexes such as textile fashion, leisure pleasures or gender coding, into his cultural analysis, for which he also uses personal introspections, sentiment and motifs from past styles and epochs.
