Armin Diem
Armin Diem (1 May 1903 – 15 August 1951) was a poet from Vorarlberg, the westernmost state of Austria. Diem wrote most of his poems in Dornbirn (Vorarlberg/Alemannic) dialect and is considered the town’s poet laureate.[1]
Life
Armin Diem was born on 1 May 1903, the thirteenth and youngest child of Matthäus Diem, a butcher and cattle dealer, in the Schäfle tavern in Haselstauden, Dornbirn. Five of his brothers and sisters died in childhood.
After finishing high school, Diem began working in a sawmill. He later became a forest ranger, which was reflected in many of his poems.[2]
He began writing poetry at the age of 18. His works deal primarily with the town of Dornbirn and the study and preservation of its dialect, with its orthographic peculiarities.
Diem died in 1951. A street in his home precinct Haselstauden was named in his honor.
