Arnika is a Czech non-governmental organization focused on environmental protection. It was founded in 2001.[1][2]

Arnika is involved in the activities of several international (International Pollutants Elimination Network, International Rivers), European (European Rivers Network, European Environmental Bureau, European ECO Forum), but also Czech networks (Green Circle, Climate Coalition, Czech Forum for Development Cooperation, DEMAS).[3]

History[edit]

Arnika was registred as civic association in 2001.[4] Arnika was founded on 29 September 2001, when part of the members left the Děti Země association.[5][6]

Lenka Mašková was first executive director of Arnika,[7] followed by Renata Chmelová in 2010–2011, and Eva Staňková in 2012–2015, without any successor since then.[8][9] Czech environmentalist Vlastimil Karlík was chairman of Arnika's board in 2001–2005, followed by Jindřich Petrlík (2004–2007; 2011–2018), and Martin Skalský (2018–2023).[10][11]

Mission, values and activity[edit]

Arnika's Team Bořena saved yellow flax before Radovesice wast soil dump from lignite mine.

Arnika stated as its mission the protection of nature and a healthy environment for future generations, including the promotion of less waste and dangerous substances, living rivers, colorful nature and the right of citizens to participate in decisions about the environment. Arnica's activity can be divided into two thematic programmes: Toxics and Waste, and Center for Citizens' Support. Nature conservation is part of its focus, including Natura 2000.[6][7][12]

Some Arnika's activities were carried out long time before it was established. Team Bořena, for example was founded in 1979 in Bílina and since 1985, has been moving endangered plant species from the forefields of the Radovesice waste soil dump, mainly from the abolished protected site Bělák. This team is now part of Arnika as well. It still cares for the rescued plants in their new refuges.[13][14]

International activities[edit]

Arnika and EARTH take samples on the e-waste site in Kalasin province, Thailand in 2022.

Arnika also has led a number of projects abroad in cooperation with non-governmental organizations in various countries, specifically in Armenia,[11][15] Bosnia and Herzegovina,[16] Gabon, Ghana,[17] Georgia, Indonesia,[18] Kazakhstan,[1] Belarus,[19] China, Thailand[20] and Ukraine.[21][22] These were often focused on the issue of toxic substances and waste,[12][21] but also on the protection of aquatic ecosystems[16] or the public participation in environmental decision-making processes.[15]

Arnika also participated in the negotiation of international conventions on toxic substances and their implementing documents, namely the Stockholm Convention, the Basel Convention and the Minamata Convention on mercury. Arnika cooperated on that field with IPEN very closely.[22][23] Arnika organized an important international conference focused on combating air pollution in 2018 in Ostrava listed on among Aarhus Convention's notable events.[24]
