Arnold Denham Boulger
Arnold Denham is credited with writing the 1899 Australian play "The Kelly Gang" about the armour-clad bushranger Ned Kelly. However, Arnold Denham's full name is Arnold Denham Boulger.
According to military records dated 16/07/1915[1], he was 42 years 8 months old at the time of enlisting, making his birth date December 1873. The same military records show he was born in the city of Lurgan in County Armagh, Ireland.
His occupation was listed as "Actor" and his marital status was shown as "Divorced".
Further military records show that he re-enlisted on 16/01/1917[2], where his occupation was stated as “Librarian and Actor”.
However, he was discharged only 48 days later on 5/03/17 as medically unfit.[3] He had a medical issue[4] and a debilitating cough.[5]
According to Richard Fotheringham in the publication "Australian plays for the colonial stage 1834 -1899 "- "In 1921, Denham (then 48 and working as a librarian) applied to the Commonwealth Literary Fund – using his full name Arnold Denham Boulger and on the basis of his status as a ‘playwright’ – for funds to go home to Dublin for his health. He was granted 10 pounds.”
Unfortunately, he never made that trip and died shortly after on December 8, 1921.
