Around The Worlds (ATWs) is a US-based nonprofit organization providing leisure, play, and participation through recreational activities for marginalized youth worldwide.[1]

History[edit]

Around The Worlds was launched in August 2015 through a pilot program at an orphanage in Lima, Peru. Following similar programs in the United States, the Philippines, Mexico, and Jamaica, Around The Worlds became a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization in April 2016. Since then, it has expanded its work to 50 total countries across five continents.

Curriculum[edit]

Around The Worlds programs advocate for lifelong learning in under-resourced communities. Through a play together, learn together, dream together model, participants are encouraged to develop teamwork, problem-solving, and leadership skills. These experiences give children new opportunities to change their lives by taking the lessons they learn during programs to reach their goals both on and off the field.[2]

Around The Worlds also collaborates with a number of professional athletes, providing an added level of instruction and inspiration to their programming. In 2015, Around The Worlds collaborated with Giuseppe Gentile, who was then playing with the San Antonio Scorpions to run a free program for Central American refugees in Texas. In 2020, at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic[3], the organization partnered with players like Julius James, Jake Nerwinski, Andre Blake, Kwame Awuah,[4] Tyler Gibson, and Drew Conner[5] to hold a weekly virtual skills challenge, garnering video responses from children in over 25 countries.[6] In 2022, Around The Worlds held in-person programs with several stars from Liga MX Femenil like Marlyn Campa and Stephanie Ribeiro of Club Universidad Nacional and Monica Flores, Christina Burkenroad, and Valeria Valdez of C.F. Monterrey. They also featured Aubrey David and Carolina Venegas of Deportivo Saprissa through their programs.

Awards[edit]

In 2016[7], ATWs founder, Stephen Schirra, was awarded the Major League Soccer Community MVP[8] for his work in the sport for social good sector.[9] In 2018, he was recognized through the Boston Celtics Heroes Among Us award programme.[10] Later that year, Around The Worlds received a substantial donation when Schirra was named a Myra Kraft Community MVP through a ceremony led by Robert Kraft and the Kraft Family Foundation.[11] In 2020, Around The Worlds received a $10,000 grant from the Bill Belichick Foundation headed by Bill Belichick and Linda Holliday.[12]
