Art + Practice
Art + Practice is a non-profit arts organization located in historic Leimert Park, South Los Angeles founded by artist Mark Bradford, activist Allan DiCastro, and philanthropist and art collector Eileen Harris Norton. The organization both aims to provide support for foster youth, as well as access to contemporary arts representing artists of color.[1] According to a statement made by the founders, "Art in combination with practice becomes a platform that can and does do more."[2]
History
Having always had a connection to Leimert Park—a neighborhood in which his mother had once operated her hair salon, and later where he established his art studio—Mark Bradford wanted to find a way to give back to the community that "crosses volunteerism and art."[1]
Art + Practice's campus includes an Art Deco building at the intersection of Degnan and West 43rd Place, which houses its main exhibition spaces and offices, as well as public programming and educational spaces in the storefronts across the street.[3]
Exhibitions
Art + Practice is known for championing artists of color, particularly Black artists, such as Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Fred Eversley, Charles Gaines, Senga Nengudi, and John Outterbridge.
Art + Practice also frequently collaborates with other arts organizations and museums, such as the Hammer Museum, The Broad, the Baltimore Museum, the Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University, and the Underground Museum.[4]
