Artem "Art" Stavenka is a British-based entrepreneur and technology executive, best known as the co-founder of Kino-mo Ltd, the company behind the HYPERVSN three-dimensional holographic display system. He appeared on the BBC television programme Dragons' Den in 2012, where he received investment offers from three Dragons — all of which were ultimately declined. HYPERVSN went on to attract investment from Richard Branson and Mark Cuban and secured commercial deployments in more than 80 countries. Stavenka was recognised by the Financial Times as one of Europe's Top 100 Changemakers.

Early life and education

Stavenka met his future business partner, Kiryl Chykeyuk, in Belarus. He subsequently moved to the United Kingdom, where he enrolled as a doctoral student at University College London (UCL).

In May 2012, Stavenka received a £7,500 enterprise award at UCL's 5th Annual Awards for Enterprise competition. The award was granted to his company Old Bond London Ltd for a bicycle wheel advertising display system capable of projecting video animations and advertisements from spinning bicycle wheels.[1]

Career

Kino-mo (2011–present)

In 2011, Stavenka and Chykeyuk co-founded Kino-mo Ltd in England and Wales, alongside a third co-founder, Ala Dziamidava.[2] The company initially developed a bicycle wheel video display product capable of projecting 3D animations and advertisements. After approximately three years of development, the founders pivoted to a spinning LED holographic display device, which was subsequently commercialised as HYPERVSN.

Dragons' Den (2012)

In 2012, Stavenka and Chykeyuk appeared on the BBC television programme Dragons' Den to present their bicycle wheel display technology.[3] Three members of the Dragons' Den panel made investment offers: Theo Paphitis offered £45,000 for a 20% equity stake; Deborah Meaden offered £45,000 for a 20% equity stake; and Hilary Devey offered the full amount independently.[4] The founders provisionally accepted the combined Paphitis and Meaden offer during filming. Following production, however, Stavenka and Chykeyuk declined all three offers, unwilling to cede the proposed equity stakes. The episode is documented in the tenth series of the programme.

HYPERVSN

In 2015, Kino-mo won Richard Branson's "Pitch to Rich" competition, securing investment from Sir Richard Branson.[5] The company subsequently raised a seed funding round of approximately $750,000, followed by a Series A round that included investment from American entrepreneur Mark Cuban.[6]

Kino-mo launched HYPERVSN commercially at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas in January 2017.[7] The HYPERVSN system uses spinning LED-equipped propeller blades to generate floating three-dimensional holographic video images visible to the naked eye without specialist equipment. The system is paired with a cloud-based content management platform enabling wireless scheduling of video content across multiple devices and locations.[7] The product attracted approximately 7,000 commercial enquiries at its CES 2017 debut.

At CES 2018, Kino-mo introduced the HYPERVSN Wall, a scalable multi-unit installation. In a partnership with the BBC, the company produced what was described as the world's largest life-size holographic person.

Large-scale manufacturing was carried out in Ireland through Flex, a multinational electronics manufacturer. By 2018, HYPERVSN products had been deployed in more than 80 countries, with the company employing over 100 people across its London headquarters and an Eastern European research and development centre.[8] Reported clients included Walmart, Coca-Cola, Dell Technologies, and Shure.

HYPERVSN received international media coverage following its commercial launch, including from outlets in France,[9] China,[7] Japan,[10] the United Arab Emirates,[11] Vietnam,[12] and the United States.[13]

In 2019, Kino-mo announced a distribution partnership with Net One Partners for the Japanese market.[14]

In 2023, HYPERVSN presented a large-scale holographic installation at The Sphere in Las Vegas.

Recognition

Stavenka was named by the Financial Times as one of Europe's Top 100 Changemakers.[15] He was also included in the Shift 100 list, produced in association with KPMG, which recognised significant contributors to retail technology. HYPERVSN received the AV Awards and Edison Awards during the period of Stavenka's co-founding tenure.
