Definitions[edit][edit]

An art therapist watches over a person with mental health problems during an art therapy workshop in Senegal.

There are various definitions of the term art therapy.

The British Association of Art Therapists defines art therapy as: "a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication." They also add that "clients who are referred to an art therapist need not have previous experience in art, the art therapist is not primarily concerned with making an aesthetic or diagnostic assessment of the client's image." [1]

The American Art Therapy Association defines art therapy as: "an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches the lives of individuals, families, and communities through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship."

Dementia[edit][edit]

Wang et al. [2] found that "the creation of art stimulates the temporal lobe, which affects object recognition and accurate expression using language, and the parietal lobe, which perceives the spatial position of objects and controls fine motor functions of the hand." Art therapy has been proven to help patients suffering with dementia of all backgrounds. It is important that the art tools are easy to use and relatively simple to understand, since mobility can also be a problem. [3] While art therapy helps with behavioral issues, it does not appear to affect worsening mental abilities. Tentative evidence supports benefits with respect to quality of life. Art therapy had no clear results on affecting memory or emotional well-being scales. However, Alzheimer's Association states that art and music can enrich people's lives and allow for self expression.

Instructor feedback: I suggest you bring over more of the original article and its structure so that I can determine how your proposed edits will fit with the flow. When you do so, please place your edits in bold so they are easy to distinguish. Reviewing the one edit I can see at this time, I do suggest you work to paraphrase so that quotations are not necessary. I am here to help and happy to re-review once you have worked through these suggestions. Also, it is unclear to me how the citations at the top of the page fit with the proposed edit? You need to include proposed citations even when drafting and those articles referenced should be moved to the "reference" section. Category:Wikipedia Student Program

Peer Review Edits:

From the feedback of Emjo2000, I will make sure that my reference links work properly and work on minimizing the use of quotations. Isha1998 recommended that I reword my edits to read clearly than they are currently written. Phrenic490 recommended that I add a new section, which I am not very interested in, so I will stick to my focus being on dementia. Kbischoff99 found that there is conflicting information in the article, and I plan to work on making sure that the information does not contradict itself. Lucyc2 offered the idea of writing more on what parts of the brain art therapy has an effect on and overall expansion of my edits. I plan to add information of the parts of the brain, and to greatly expand my additions. I do not believe that Amonroyr read the article, because they didn't see how dementia is related to the topic of art therapy. Mcaro99 reminded me to make sure that the reference links are working properly and to add some more recent research.
