Artan Shabani (born 1969) is an Albanian painter and curator based between Tirana, Albania, and Turin, Italy. He is the founder of the Promenade Gallery in Vlorë and served as director of the National Gallery of Arts in Tirana from 2013 to 2017. As a curator he has organised exhibitions of Albanian art at institutions including the Pera Museum in Istanbul and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA) in Acri, Italy, and, since 2021, has exhibited his own paintings in Germany and Austria as a member of the Willingshausen painters' colony.
Shabani's paintings and mixed-media work are centred on the transformation of societies shaped by the trauma of the Cold War, engaging themes of personal and collective memory, migration and Balkan identity. His work is held in public collections including the National Gallery of Arts in Tirana and the National Gallery of Kosovo, and he has received recognition including a special prize from the Pohjanmaan museo in Vaasa, Finland (2003) and first prize at the 7th Biennial of Visual Arts in Venice (2018).
Early life
Shabani was born in 1969 in Vlorë, then part of communist Albania.[1] He attended the "Naim Frashëri" Artistic Lyceum in Vlorë between 1984 and 1988.[2] In 1991, during the collapse of Albania's communist government, he emigrated to Italy, later working and travelling between France and Spain while developing his practice as a painter.[1][2] He subsequently earned a bachelor's degree in political science from "Pavarësia" University in Vlorë, completed in 2012.[2]
Career
Early exhibitions and Promenade Gallery (1990s–2009)
During the 1990s Shabani exhibited mainly in and around Turin, where he had settled, showing at spaces such as the Ginkgo Biloba space (1996) and an open-air venue in Rosta (1995).[2] In 2003 he received a special prize from the Pohjanmaan museo (Österbottens museum) in Vaasa, Finland.[2][3]
In 2007, Shabani founded the Promenade Gallery in his native Vlorë, a contemporary art space that has presented both Albanian and international artists.[4][5] In 2009 he curated the joint Albania and Kosovo pavilion at the 4th Prague Biennale.[2][6]
Director of the National Gallery of Arts (2013–2017)
In 2013 Shabani was appointed director of the National Gallery of Arts in Tirana, a decision credited to Prime Minister Edi Rama.[7][8] During his tenure the gallery organised exhibitions such as a 2016 co-curated presentation of works from the Ludwig Museum, Budapest, held in Tirana,[2] and he served as jury president of the "Live Art" Albanian Contemporary Painting Competition (2013).[2]
Shabani's term ended in October 2017; his successor, Erzen Shkololli, was formally appointed in January 2018.[9][10]
Curatorial projects (2018–present)
After leaving the National Gallery, Shabani continued to curate exhibitions on Albanian art history. In 2018 he co-curated, with Boris Brollo, "Albania: The Spirit of the Times" at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MACA) in Acri, Italy, a survey exhibition covering a century of Albanian art that was conceived as a touring show beginning in Calabria.[11][12][13]
In 2020, Shabani curated "Constructing a Dream: Socialist Realism in Albanian Art" at the Pera Museum in Istanbul, an exhibition examining the influence of communist ideology on Albanian painting, posters and drawings during the second half of the 20th century.[14][15][16] The accompanying catalogue, published by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation, paired an essay by art historian Ermir Hoxha with a curatorial text by Shabani.[17]
Shabani was commissioner-appointed curator of the Albania Pavilion, "Mobility Albania Pavilion," at Expo 2020 Dubai (held 2021–2022), commissioned by Sokol Nano.[2][18]
Painting and the Willingshausen circle (2021–present)
Since 2021 Shabani has been a member of the "Malerstübchen Willingshausen" painters' association in Hesse, Germany, participating in the annual Willingshausen painters' symposium.[19][20] In 2022 he exhibited jointly with painter Ben Kamili in "Die Macht der Farbe" ("The Power of Colour") at Haus Kunst Mitte in Berlin and at ArteQ Gallery in Vienna.[21]
In May 2025 he presented the solo exhibition "Weil das Meer dein Spiegel ist" ("Perché il mare è il tuo specchio", after a phrase attributed to Charles Baudelaire) at the Museum Malerstübchen in Willingshausen.[22][23]
Artistic style
Shabani works across painting, drawing, photography, video and installation.[2][3] Critics and gallery texts describe his work as centred on the metamorphosis of societies shaped by the trauma of the Cold War, approached from both a local and international perspective and often built around personal and collective memory.[2][3] A recurring concern in his research is the idea of "Balkan" identity, examined through tradition, migration and the tension between integration into a broader European framework and the preservation of local heritage.[3]
In describing his 2025 Willingshausen exhibition, curator Ben Kamili characterised Shabani's painting as extending beyond traditional landscape work, combining expressive force with sensitivity to translate inner states through nature-based imagery.[23]
