Arthritis Action
Founded in 1942, Arthritis Action is the only UK charity giving hands-on help to combat arthritis pain through self-management and lifestyle advice. It gives people access to physical therapies in their local area alongside personal dietary and nutritional advice to help them manage their arthritis. It helps people to take early action against the onset of arthritis, manage the pain it can cause and enjoy life to the full. [1]
They are a registered charity who works in partnership with members, health professionals, other charities, researchers, arthritis experts and corporations.[2]
They believe that although over 10 million people in the UK have arthritis, everyone is unique in the way they manage their symptoms. That is why they tailor our self-management approach to your needs and make it individual to you.[3]
How they do this:
- All their services are based on research and credible evidence.
- They work with a range of health professionals.
- Each member is encouraged to engage with their professional staff and Associate Practitioners. They receive advice on healthy eating and weight management, exercise, physical therapies and education, leading to an individualised self-management plan.
- They encourage people to come together locally by running local Arthritis Action Groups. This provides opportunities to reduce isolation, share experiences and tips of living with arthritis and to experience learning more about self-management and reducing the pain of arthritis.
- They run Self-Management Events to educate members and non-members in various ways, enabling them to take control of their arthritis and therefore their lives.[4]
With a network of practitioners across the UK, members and patients alike can access resources to better their health and improve their symptoms.[5]
Arthritis Action is a member of various health organisations in the UK including National Voices and ARMA.
Bringing together 140 charity members and 20 professional and associate members, National Voices is the coalition of health and social care charities in England. Together our members work for a strong patient and citizen voice in health and care, and services that are built around people. Arthritis Action is an important member of this coalition. [6]
ARMA (UK) is the professional membership association for Research Managers and Administrators in the UK. We currently have over 3,000 individual members from around 250 organisations, ranging from Universities and Funding Bodies to the National Health Service and independent Research Institutions. Arthritis Action is also a valued member of the ARMA association. [7]
Arthritis Action also provides support groups in various areas across England for those living with arthritis to connect with one another. Arthritis Action Groups offer Members a platform to meet others, share experiences and tips on living with arthritis and learn more about local services.
These take place approximately every six weeks and cover a range of subjects such as arthritis self-management programmes, managing your symptoms through physical therapy and movement with music. For a full event listing, visit their website.[8]
