Arthur H. Van Vlissingen

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Arthur H. Van Vlissingen was a prominent Dutch American immigrant, commercial real estate developer and broker in late 19th and early 20th century Chicago.[1] He is the father of Arthur Van Vlissingen Jr. an American writer and bureau chief for Bloomberg Businessweek and Newsweek.[2]

Arthur H. and his brother James Van Vlissingen co-founded Van Vlissingen and Co. a full-service commercial real estate brokerage company in Northern, Illinois. Arthur was an influential member of the Dutch American community in Roseland, Illinois.[3] [4] Before the Van Vlissingen brothers arrival, Roseland was an entirely agrarian Dutch American neighborhood south of the City of Chicago. After the end of the American Civil War as major industrialization began, Arthur H. and James Van Vlissingen developed 400 acres of Roseland, transforming the area.[3] The Van Vlissingen industrial development in Roseland in coordination with George M. Pullman's planned industrial city, turned Roseland into a vibrant multi cultural and cosmopolitan community. [5]

Arthur and James Van Vlissingen are also known for their role in the World's Columbian Exhibition and Van Vlissingen and Co's planned development of Port of Chicago and Lake Calumet.[6] [7]
