At the peak of his career, he was one of the most famous English theatre and music hall actors [1]. He trod the boards of theatres across the north of England and later in Glasgow, where he moved to work at the Metropole Theatre in 1902. He worked together with his wife the dramatic actress comedian Madge Metcalfe (1860-1908).
Their marriage produced five children. As well as Arthur Stanley (Stan Laurel), born in 1890, Edward Jefferson was also an actor who would appear in four of Stan's shorts.
Among Jefferson's works the best remembered are Home from the Honeymoon, from which were drawn the film scripts of the films Duck Soup, in 1927, and Another Fine Mess, in 1930, both starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.
He died in 1949 and was buried in Barkston and Syston Cemetery in Barkston, Lincolnshire.
