Since its first edition, which dates back to 1996, the event, organized by Ge.Fi. spa, was initially held at the Fieramilanocity exhibition center in the Portello district of Milan; since 2005 everything has been moved to the new Fieramilano exhibition center in Rho. Every year hundreds of artisans, from all over the world, contribute to traditional Milanese craftsmanship a platform for handmade consumer goods, displaying them publicly (food, accessories, clothes, jewelry, home decor, cosmetics, etc.) In addition to numerous catering areas and live demonstrations at the stands, it is also possible to attend musical events and interactive workshops. Between 1996 and 2015, over 24 million visitors were registered; since June 2014, the fair has been connected to the Internet through the Artimondo online platform.
In 2020, due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, in order to avoid gatherings, it was decided not to host the public directly at the exhibition center, but to switch the event into a live online one, lasting almost a month.
