Artists Against Racism is a not-for-profit Canadian charity which partners with artists, musicians, and actors,[1] and utilizes radio public service announcements, social media, billboard and bus shelter campaigns, and print and television advertisement in order to promote anti-racist messages.[2]
History[edit]
AAR was launched in November 1995.[1] It was co-founded by journalist Lisa Cherniak and artist Mendelson Joe as a response to the presence of white supremacist groups in Canada.[3]
In 1996 Artists Against Racism became a registered charity, and launched campaigns such as radio and TV PSAs, billboards (featuring the artwork of Kurt Swinghammer) and more.[1]

In 2010, AAR gave a Take a Stand Award to Hockey Coach Greg Walsh.[4]
In 2011, AAR helped sponsor the CD project One World One Heart Beating, which was recorded by Oona McQuat.[5]
The first annual AAR Humanitarian Award was granted posthumously in 2017 to the late Gord Downie of The Tragically Hip.
Awards[edit]
In 1996, Artists Against Racism was honoured with the City of Toronto's William P Hubbard Award for Race Relations.[6]
In 2001, it received the Global Tolerance Award on behalf of the United Nations.[7]
In 2002, AAR was awarded the Canadian Peace Award by the Canadian Centre for Teaching Peace.[8]
