Arts on the Hudson

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Arts on the Hudson is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization based in Jersey City, New Jersey.[1]. The organization began as a pantomime theatre company founded by artist Grigory Gurevich in the Soviet Union; by 1979, Gurevich had immigrated to the United States and established its American incarnation, Grigur's Pantomime Theatre. In 1998, Gurevich expanded the offerings of his organization to provide arts education programming to schools across Jersey City, New Jersey, his new home, and rebranded the non-profit as Arts on the Hudson [2].

In 2018, a new generation of arts and education leaders from the Jersey City community, including film director and artist Alexander Gurevich [3] and recording artist and performer Murdock [4] [5], were invited to join the Board of Directors. Currently, Arts on the Hudson is expanding it offerings to provide arts classes for undeserved neighborhoods in Jersey City [6] , concerts spotlighting local musicians[7], and free events for the community[8].

Mission[edit]

  • providing affordable art classes in visual, literary, and performing arts for children and adults;
  • encouraging gifted students to continue their study of the arts through opportunities both within and beyond our programs;
  • connecting artists with paid teaching and art-making positions;
  • providing all aforementioned activities to members of the public with no special constituency;
  • attracting, collaborating, and exchanging with leading artists not only from Hudson County and the greater New York Metro area but also the global community.

History[edit]

Arts on the Hudson is a non-profit organization that originated as Grigur's Pantomime Theater, founded in 1979 by Grigory Gurevich [9].

Gurevich grew up in Leningrad (Saint Petersburg). In 1966, under the influence of world famous mime Marcel Marceau, Gurevich created Grigur's Pantomime Theatre, his first professional pantomime company [10]. With Grigur’s Pantomime Theatre, he had the opportunity to perform in film, theater, and independent productions[11]. However, under intense political pressure, Gurevich was forced to dissolve his company and flee the Soviet Union[9].

Gurevich came to the United States in 1976 and, in 1979, founded the American incarnation of Grigur’s Pantomime Theater in New York and, later, in Jersey City as a non-profit organization. Upon discovering the lack of arts programming available to students in Jersey City schools, he expanded the offerings of his non-profit to include education [12]. In 1998, Gurevich re-branded Grigur's Pantomime Theatre as Arts on the Hudson [AOTH] with the expanded goal of promoting arts and culture in Jersey City and the greater Hudson County.

To establish AOTH, Gurevich received a $1,000 grant from the Hudson County Cultural Affairs as well as additional funding from the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. Programs offered by AOTH included included drawing, painting, music, African dance, stained glass, sculpture, martial arts, pantomime and web design.

2018: A New Era[edit]

Arts on the Hudson went through a period of expansion beginning in the winter of 2018 with the addition of new members on the Board of Directors[13]. During the spring semester of the 2017-2018 school year, AOTH partnered with Bergenview Head Start (program) to bring STEAM[1]classes to undeserved children [14].

In conjunction with the JC Oddites Market [15] [16] and Bushwick Sounds [17], AOTH organized its inaugural annual Arts on the Hudson Fest this past September [18], showcasing local artists including Evangelia [2], 7onpump1 [3], DAZED [4], and HelloImDylan [5], as well as as variety of local artisans[8] [19].

Under the leadership of the new board, AOTH also expanded its media offerings through its production wing, Pyrrhic Productions[6]. Pyrrhic is best known for its collaboration with MoonCulture Films [7] on a music video for the single "Lockjaw" by Cook Thugless [20] ft. Shyrley Rodriguez [21] and starring frontman Jean Louis Droulers and actor Brandon Flynn, filmed across the United States and South Korea, that has garnered over 200,000 views on YouTube [22]

The new board also spearheaded the construction and design of https://artsonthehudson.com/ a new website for the organization.
