Arun Gupta

Arun Gupta is an open source strategist, advocate, and practitioner for over two decades. He has led transformative changes at major companies like Apple, Amazon, Intel, and Sun Microsystems, enabling them to embrace open source principles and tackle complex global challenges. This enabled them to leverage community-powered collaboration and use that as a force multiplier to expedite solving challenging problems. He has mentored numerous startups and worked with hundreds of customers to define their open collaboration strategies to make them more effective.

He is also an active proponent of kindness, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace, working to create a more welcoming and supportive environment for all.

Early Life[edit]

Gupta attended D. T. E. A. Senior Secondary School, Mandir Marg. He did his under graduation in Electronics from Hansraj College, Delhi University. He completed his Masters in Computers from Delhi University.

His childhood was spent in Chandni Chowk and Dariba Kalan streets of Delhi. He has a penchant for chaat-style food from that region.

Career[edit]

Gupta started his career in July 1996 at HCL Hewlett Packard in Noida, India. He worked there for one year as Member of Technical Staff. He wrote his first Java program to enable database connection from applets for an internal application.

He left HCL in June 1997 and joined Hughes Software Systems, Gurgaon as Senior Software Engineer. He worked on software for network analysis.

He left Hughes Software Systems in July 1998 and came to USA as an engineer through Global Infotech. He worked there for six months using Java, CORBA and IDL for a client.

Gupta left Global Infotech in February 1999 and joined Sun Microsystems as Software Quality Engineer in the JDK team. He continued to stay with Sun Microsystems after the company was acquired by Oracle Corporation. During his time at Sun/Oracle, he took multiple roles of writing test code, creating W3C standards, implementing them in JDK, interoperability between Java and .NET, and driving the global evangelism effort for Java EE.

He left Oracle in Sep 2013 and joined Red Hat as Director of Technical Marketing and Developer Advocacy.

He left Red Hat in Sep 2015 and joined Couchbase as Vice President of Developer Relations.

In April 2017, he transitioned from his role at Couchbase to become the Principal Open Source Technologist at Amazon. At Amazon, he played a key role in defining and executing the open source strategy across multiple AWS services. Among his notable contributions, he helped establish the Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS) team and was involved in the successful launch of the service. Additionally, he led efforts to develop and promote open source projects such as Amazon Corretto, Firecracker, and Open Distro for Elasticsearch. His work in this area was instrumental in Amazon's membership in the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and he was eventually appointed as the organization's primary Governing Board representative for Amazon.

After leaving Amazon in February 2020, he assumed the role of Head of the Open Source Program Office at Apple. In addition to leading Apple's Kubernetes Testing and Java teams, he was instrumental in recruiting over 40 experts from the cloud native community. As part of his efforts to advance the field of cloud computing, he shifted his Governing Board affiliation from CNCF to Apple. In recognition of his contributions, he was elected as chairperson of the CNCF Governing Board in November 2021, cementing his status as a leading figure in the open source community.

In April 2022, he departed from Apple to assume the role of Vice President and General Manager of Open Ecosystems at Intel. As part of his new responsibilities, he now serves as Intel's primary representative on the CNCF Governing Board, building on his extensive experience in the open source community. In addition, he represents Intel at the Open Source Security Foundation, where he is actively involved in advancing security standards across the industry. Finally, he is also an alternate representative for Intel at the Linux Foundation, where he helps shape the future of open source technology. Personal Life[edit]

Arun spends significant time towards social responsibility and community service. He has run a global non-profit organization for over a decade, promoting technology education among children. Arun is also an active mentor for multiple merit badges in The Boy Scouts of America. He serves as a positive role model and regularly counseling others on the importance of a healthy lifestyle among his family and friends. He leads the Silicon Valley Java User Group that brings 7,000 Java developers together for over a decade.

His dedication to making a positive impact in the world extends far beyond the workplace, inspiring others to join him in his pursuit of meaningful social change.

His most fun experience was writing the Minecraft Modding book with his son when he was 11-years old.

Running and Lifting[edit]

Arun is a seasoned athlete who has completed numerous half and full marathons, as well as a couple of ultramarathons. In January 2018, he began incorporating weightlifting into his fitness routine, gradually increasing the intensity and frequency of his workouts. His dedication to weightlifting reached a new level when he installed a Rogue power cage in his garage in November 2021, allowing him to pursue his passion for strength training with even greater focus and enthusiasm.
