Arun Sakhardande (born 8 September 1948) is an Indian poet and academic from Goa, known for his contributions to Konkani literature. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2010 for his poetry anthology Kavlyachem Sraddha.[1][2][3]
Early life and education
Sakhardande was born on 8 September 1948 in Sakhali, Goa. He completed a Master of Commerce (M.Com), a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B), and a Higher Diploma in Co-operation (H.D.C.). He also holds a Pandit H.S.S. (Senior) qualification.[1]
Career
Professional career
Sakhardande's professional career began as a trained Hindi teacher at Progress High School in Panaji from 1967 to 1971. He subsequently served as a Senior Auditor in the Office of the Registrar of Co-operative Societies for the Government of Goa and as the secretary of the board of directors for the Madgaon Urban Co-operative Bank.[1]
Transitioning into higher education, he worked as a lecturer at St. Xavier's College, Mapusa and S.S. Dempo College of Commerce and Economics. He eventually served as the principal of Narayan Zantye College of Commerce from 1995 until his retirement in 2013. He was also a visiting lecturer at Goa University for five years and held positions on the university's Court and Academic Council.[1]
Literary career
Sakhardande began writing poetry and short stories in Konkani in 1966. His literary work has been influenced by figures such as Ravindra Kelekar, G.A. Kulkarni, and Munshi Premchand. His poems have been translated into several Indian languages, including Hindi, English, Marathi, Kashmiri, Malayalam, Kannada, Gujarati, Sindhi, and Punjabi.[1]
He has been actively involved in numerous literary organizations, serving as the founder secretary of Konkani Seva Kendra and the founder vice-president of Bardez Konkani Asmitai Kendra.[1] As of 2022[update], he was the president of the Goa Konkani Akademi.[4]
Sakhardande was part of the Konkani language agitation.[5] In 2015, he was part of a protest by Sahitya Akademi Award winners against the killings of writers and rationalists across India.[2]
