The Arusha Working Papers in African Linguistics (AWPAL) is a peer-reviewed, open-access, online-only, international academic journal whose goal is to provide a forum for discussions about applied and theoretical issues in African linguistics. AWPAL welcomes original contributions on all aspects of African languages and linguistics, in particular those that are data-oriented and descriptive or pedagogical in nature. Nonetheless, manuscripts are accepted across all domains of linguistics on a rolling basis for consideration in the annual volume. Additionally, AWPAL is indexed in a variety of academic venues and is a certified 'platinum' open-access journal.[1]

The AWPAL began with the founding of the Arusha Linguistics Circle in Usa River, Tanzania in the summer of 2017 when educators and students came together weekly at the MS Training Centre for Development Cooperation (MS-TCDC) to present and discuss their research on African languages and linguistics.[2] As such, the inaugural volume was released in 2018 and, excluding a one-year period during the global COVID-19 Pandemic, has published a new volume every year. Some of the languages found throughout these volumes include the following (ordered alphabetically): Afrikaans, Alege, Ateso, Bukusu, Endo-Marakwet, Ha, Iraqw, Kimbu, Meeto-Makhuwa, Sepitori, Setswana, Swahili, and Tswa.[3]
