Arye Sharuz Shalicar
Arye Sharuz Shalicar (Hebrew: אריה שרוז שליקר; born August 13th 1977 in Göttingen)
is a German-Iranian-Israeli Political Scientist, writer and government employee. The former Graffiti-artist and Hip-Hop musician serves since 2009 in the rank of Major in the IDF Spokesperson's Unit. Since 2017 he leads a department within the Israeli administration. The movie German: Ein nasser Hund (lit. 'A wet dog') concerning his youth entered the German movies in 2021.
Shalicar is the son of Persian Jews which fled their homeland to Germany in the 1970s. He grew up secular in Berlin, without knowing about his Jewish background. When he moved from Berlin-Spandau to Berlin-Wedding with a high amount of Muslims he became a target of Antisemitism which made him ally of Kurdish and Lebanese gangs. Starting as an graffiti artist he later concentrated on Hip-Hop acting under the name BossARO together with artists as Frauenarzt, Manny Marc and MC Bogy..[1] [2] [3] [4][5]
After finishing school in 1997 with Abitur Shalicar left the scene and did his mandatory National service at the Mecical corps of the Bundeswehr. Afterwards beginning to study social science at the Humboldt University of Berlin he changed Political Science, Jewish studies and Islamic studies at the Free University of Berlin. [6]
He did Aliyah in 2001 followed by his National service in the Israel Defense Forces in a support unit of the Paratroopers Brigade. Afterwards he continued his studies in political science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem which he finished with a first degree in 2006, followed by a Master's degree in European Studies. Since 2006 he was activ for the Jewish Agency and worked for the public German broadcaster ARD in Tel Aviv.[7]
In the end of 2009 he returned to military service in the IDF Spokesperson's Unit in which he worked as official spokesman and head of the European Department. In the 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis [8] and the October 2023 Gaza–Israel conflict[9] he was mobilised to this unit.
Since the beginning of 2017 Shalicar works as a department head for foreign relations in the Prime Ministers Office in Jerusalem.[10]
The movie German: Ein nasser Hund (lit. A wet dog) based on Shalicar´s autobiography German: Ein nasser Hund ist besser als ein trockener Jude - Die Geschichte eines Deutsch-Iraners, der Israeli wurde. (lit. A wet dog is better than a dry Jew - The story of a German-Iranian, who became an Israeli) entered German cinema in 2021.[11]
He occasinaly writes articles for the German and international press for e.g. Die Welt, Nordwest-Zeitung, Berliner Zeitung, Jüdische Allgemeine and The Jerusalem Post.
Since 2010 he[12] is married, father of two children and lives close to Jerusalem.[13]
