Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc. (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is a Japanese publishing company headquartered in Tsukiji, Chūō, Tokyo. It was established on 1 April 2008, when the publishing division of The Asahi Shimbun Company was spun off into a separate subsidiary, and it took over the newspaper company's magazine and book publishing operations.[1] The company published Shūkan Asahi, Japan's oldest general weekly magazine, launched in 1922, and continues to publish the weekly AERA, founded in 1988, along with its digital news site AERA dot.[2] Its book publishing includes the Asahi Shinsho new book series and the Asahi Bunko bunkobon line.[1]
In 2012, the company's president resigned to take responsibility for articles published in Shūkan Asahi about the background of the then Osaka mayor Tōru Hashimoto, following protests by Hashimoto.[3]
In January 2023, the company announced that Shūkan Asahi would cease publication at the end of May 2023, citing the shrinking market for weekly magazines and declining advertising revenue, and said it would concentrate its resources on digital media and book publishing. The magazine's circulation, which had exceeded one million copies in the 1950s, had fallen to about 74,000 by December 2022; its final issue was dated 9 June 2023.[3][4][2]
