Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, RWP (Sinhala: අසංග ලංකාතිලක; 1966 - 8 August 1992) was a naval officer attached to the Sri Lanka Navy. Asanga was fatally wounded and his commanders and staff killed when the Land Rover they were travelling in hit a land mine in Kayts island while making preparations for Operation Final Countdown (the proposed invasion of the Jaffna Peninsula).[1]

Asanga was born in Colombo and received his education from Nalanda College, Colombo. While at school he was a a member of the cadet platoon.[2][3]
Military career[edit]
After leaving school he joined the Sri Lanka Navy as a naval cadet.
Death[edit]
On 8 August 1992, Asanga was in Point Arali, Kytes Island Jaffna together with Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha and other officers travelling in Land Rovers in order to coordinate Operation Final Countdown. During this time their Land Rover was hit by a land mine, and Commander Lankathilaka died together with others from his battalion.[4]
