The rugby club was founded in 1922 by amalgamating the two Ashington Welfares, hence the clubs official title of Ashington Joint Welfare R.F.C. How or why the amalgamation occurred is unclear but reference to Northumberland County Records shows that prior to 1922 Ashington won the No 2 Cup competition in 1908, while Ashington and Hirst United won the No 3 cup the same year..
