Ashish Talwar
Ashish Talwar (born 1969) is an Indian political leader who is widely considered[by whom?] to be the chief political strategist and campaign manager of Arvind Kejriwal led Aam Aadmi Party. He is also considered to be one of the key architects of AAP’s victories in all of three Delhi elections – 2013, 2015, and 2020.[1]
Talwar earned his political spurs with the Indian National Congress holding various positions in the Indian Youth Congress and All India Congress Committee from 1996 to 2008. From 2008 to early 2013 he was not political active until on the invitation of Arvind Kejriwal he joined the Aam Aadmi Party.[2]
2013 Delhi Legislative Assembly Election[edit]
As the Election caller, Talwar was entrusted with managing each of the 70 assembly seats of Delhi. Talwar’s know-how of every ward of Delhi was instrumental in AAP's performance. Although Talwar had known Kejriwal from a very long time, they lost touch and were only reconnected when AAP was formed. Joining the party full-time only in 2013, Talwar soon became the go-to man for every AAP candidate.[3] It was Talwar's idea for Kejriwal to embark on Delhi wide roadshows to connect with every nook and corner of Delhi, as these roadshows were a cost-effective mechanism involving two vehicles, one of which would have Kejriwal standing in an open jeep waving at people crowding the streets.[4] After AAP’s spectacular debut in December 2013, Talwar was appointed as the first ever Convenor of the party’s state unit.[5]
2015 Delhi Assembly Elections[edit]
Changing the strategy of Aam Aadmi Party, for this campaign, Talwar chose Jansabhas in each Constituency of Delhi. Other than the Jansabhas of Arvind Kejriwal, Talwar set up the entire ground campaigning of AAP as well manning and managing 13,000 polling stations across Delhi.[6] Talwar played a crucial role in creating a veritable army of 40,000 volunteers to strengthen the party’s organisational structure at the polling booth, polling centre, ward, and district levels.[7] After the historic 2015 victory, Ashish Talwar was appointed Political Advisor to Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal.[8] In March 2015, a political battle broke out between rival camps of AAP, Ashish Talwar stuck with Kejriwal and was one of the key party leaders backing him against the dissident camp led by Prashant Bhushan and Yogendra Yadav.[9] It was reported in some sections of the media that Talwar was the one who made all 67 AAP MLAs sign a letter demanding disciplinary action against the dissidents.[10] After the 2016 organisation elections within AAP, Ashish Talwar was elected to the party’s National Executive. The same year, Ashish Talwar was also appointed Prabhari of the AAP Delhi unit.[11]
2020 Delhi Assembly Elections[edit]
For the 2020 Delhi Assembly Elections, Ashish Talwar returned to take charge of Arvind Kejriwal’s Roadshows and Jansabhas that were conducted throughout Delhi.[12]
