Ashley Dalton (born 15 August 1972) is a British political activist and community worker who is the Labour Party's candidate for the 2022 West Lancashire by-election,[2] which is likely to be triggered following the impending resignation of incumbent Labour MP Rosie Cooper.
Early life and education
Dalton was born in Leyland, Lancashire. Her father was a factory worker for Leyland Motors before becoming a nurseryman.[3]
Dalton attended Preston College before reading English and Politics at Middlesex University. She was the sabbatical president of Middlesex University Students' Union.[1]
Career
Dalton has worked directly for the Labour Party, as well as local government. She has worked for Southend-on-Sea City Council as well as the London Borough of Havering.[1]
Dalton is currently a trainer for Labour Women's Network.[1]
Political career
Dalton was the Labour Party's candidate in the 2017 and 2019 general elections for Rochford and Southend East, coming second to incumbent Conservative Party MP James Duddridge both times. She increased Labour's share of the vote from 24.7% in 2015 to 37% in 2017.
In October 2022, the Labour Party confirmed that Dalton had been selected as their candidate for the 2022 West Lancashire by-election following the resignation of incumbent Labour MP Rosie Cooper,[4] having previously been shortlisted alongside Emma Fox and Louise Harbour.
Personal life
She has one daughter.[3] She is a breast cancer survivor, having previously lost her husband John to kidney cancer.[3]
