Ashley Spurlin is a United States Air Force veteran, a Combat Controller, and a Bronze Star recipient.[1] He is also a competitive shooter known for his participation in the second season of History Channel's marksmen competition Top Shot and shoots in three gun competitions for Team FNH USA.[2]
Biography[edit]
Ashley Spurlin was raised in Monterey, California.[1] His father is a retired Army Airborne Artillery Officer. During his childhood, he had some experience with firearms. However, it wasn't until he enlisted in the United States Air Force that he got interested in shooting. Spurlin graduated from basic recruit training for the Air Force on January 1, 2001 at Lackland Air Force Base. Spurlin is also a certified Air Traffic Controller, Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC), Airborne, High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) and SCUBA certified as well.[2] During his first years, Spurlin was deployed to Okinawa,[2] Romania, Philippines, Borneo, Indonesia, Malaysia and Uzbekistan.[1]
From August 2007 to February 2008, Spurlin served with Special Forces Operational Detachment Alpha 3313, Special Operations Task Force 33 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom during the War in Afghanistan. The detachment routinely deployed through the Kunar Province to conduct missions intended to capture or kill Al-Qaeda or Taliban operatives along the Afghanistan and Pakistan border. Spurlin worked on a large air assault infiltration into a heavily guarded village in the Waturpor Valley where they started taking enemy fire. Performing his Combat Control duties, Spurlin used an AC-130 and Apache helicopters to eliminate hostiles on the ground opening the way for Allied Forces, among other actions. As a result, Spurlin was recognized for his service and was awarded the Bronze Star.[1][2]
After the deployment, Spurlin was assigned to work at Keesler Air Force Base, in Biloxi, Mississippi as a Combat Control Instructor. During that time, he heard about History Channel's marksmen competition Top Shot and decided to apply. He was chosen and in 2011, Spurlin appeared in the second season of the show. During the first half of the competition, Spurlin competed as part of the Blue Team. His team ended up winning two challenges, and Ashley was nominated for elimination once during that period. However, Spurlin was eliminated during the final half of the competition.
