Ashley Ruth Wheeler (born August 6, 1986) was crowned Miss Vermont 2008 on Saturday, April 26, 2008, in Barre, Vermont.[1]

Personal life[edit]

Wheeler was born in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, to Michael & Donna Ellsworth Wheeler.[2] She grew up in Lyndonville, Vermont.[1]

Miss America[edit]

Her vocal talent was singing "The Prayer." Ashley's platform is Political Awareness Among Young Voters.[1][3] She was competing for the title of Miss America 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada in January and she won a Preliminary Talent Award for her a capella vocal performance of "God Bless America."[4] This marked the first time a representative of the state of Vermont won a preliminary award at the Miss America Pageant.[5]

She wore an eco-friendly gown that she had crafted by local Vermont designer Tara Lynn.[6]

In 2009, Vermont Secretary of State Deb Markowitz presented Wheeler with one of seven Enduring Democracy Awards for her commitment to advancing the democratic process in the state.[7]
