Ashwika Kapur (Ash Kapur) is a qualified Science & Natural History Filmmaker of Indian Origin.[1]

She is India's youngest and only woman to win the Panda Award (also popularly known as the The Green Oscar') in a global category at WILDSCREEN [2][3][4][5] She won the award for her documentary film on Sirocco (parrot) – “Sirocco – how a dud became a stud, a rags-to-riches story about a celebrity Kakapo Bird with a government job in New Zealand.[6][7] The film was also nominated for a Grand Teton Award at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival. [8]

Ashwika likes to be involved in as many aspects of the filmmaking process as possible. She has even appeared in front of the camera to help the audience get closer to the experience of being on location.[9]

In 2019, she presented “Heroes of the Wild Frontier” for Animal Planet, the first ever television series on Forest Guards in India.[10] [11]

Ashwika’s career has so far taken her to live and work in several parts of the world, including India, South Africa, Kenya, Borneo, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Her ultimate hero and inspiration is Sir David Attenborough. It was a real dream-come-true for her the first time she got a chance to work with him in the United Kingdom.[12]

Personal Life

Born and schooled in Calcutta, India, Ashwika Kapur is the daughter of Ashwani Kapur and Munmun Kapur. She is the grand-daughter of Dr. A.P Kapur, a renowned scientist, and former Director of the Zoological Survey of India in the late 60s.[13] Passionate about animals from an early age, Ashwika spent most of her childhood in the company of assorted pets at home. She had animals like ducks, pigeons, guinea pigs, white mice, rabbits & roosters living with her in her 12th floor city-apartment.

Ashwika grew up as a child actor in the 90’s, appearing in several advertisements, tele-films and stage productions in her home city. Her love of cameras came from her early involvement in the entertainment industry. Apart from filmmaking, Ashwika also dabbles in writing,[14] quizzing and public speaking. She is a TEDx speaker. [15]

Education

Ashwika was schooled at La Martiniere Calcutta. Thereafter, she graduated with Honours in English Literature from St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. Her Post Graduation was in Science communication from the University of Otago.
