Asia Initiatives[edit]

Asia Initiatives is a 501c3 development nonprofit founded in 1999 by Dr. Geeta Mehta and Krishen Mehta.

Social Capital Credits[edit]

In October 2014, Asia Initiatives developed Social Capital Credits (SoCCs), a community currency and method for international development .[1][2]

Social Capital Credits aim to incentivize acts of social good by rewarding communities with credits for activities like sending girls to school, cleaning community spaces and attending health screenings. Individuals can redeem these credits for resources intended to help them escape poverty and for resources intended to help their community, like skills training, low-interest microloans and small business starter kits.[3]

Programs[edit]

Asia Initiatives has been involved with dharavimarket.com, a company in India that sells locally made leather goods and jewelry online. The founder, Megha Gupta, has used the concept of Social Capital Credits to hire more women and open bank accounts. Asia Initiatives provided grant money to the organization during its founding stages[4].

Asia Initiatives has also been involved in different projects in India, improving sanitation in low-income settlements and equipping farms with communication help and information on weather patterns.[5]
