Asia American International Academy (AAIA; Chinese: 華美美國學校、新北美國學校) is a private, co-educational, international school located in Linkou District, New Taipei, Taiwan. The school, which offers middle-high school (grade 6-12) college preparatory curriculum, was established in 2016. The founding and current principal is Mr. Stephen Cravak.
History[edit]
New Taipei City is Taiwan's largest municipality; many professional Taiwanese citizens and foreign expatriates work and live in New Taipei City. However, there had not been international or American schools available. Parents of New Taipei school-aged children who possess a foreign passport and would like to send their youth(s) to a private international or American curriculum school have had to rely on options in central Taipei City. In the past few years, the number of foreign passport holding international school students in Taipei has reached saturation, and many New Taipei City parents are finding their children set aside and placed on wait lists.[1]
School founder and chairman Mr. Allan Liang sought to address this lack of educational opportunity amongst New Taipei City residents and began coordination with the Ministry of Education, and the New Taipei City Bureau of Education. In November to 2014 the school was granted a founding license and approval to move forward on planning the construction of New Taipei City's first international American curriculum school, Asia American International Academy (AAIA)[2]. AAIA has also acquired consent for establishment of the school with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).
Academics[edit]
AAIA’s curriculum is adopted from the California State Curriculum, Common Core Curriculum Standards, among others. Courses fall into several categories such as English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Art, Music, Business, and World Language. AAIA offers Advanced Placement courses, which adhere strictly to the rigorous standards developed by the College Board.
English as Another Language (EAL) Program[edit]
English is the language of instruction at AAIA. Since many students are new to international school, the EAL department provides language support and works with all other content teachers to support students' learning within the middle school.
College and Career Readiness (CCR)[edit]
AAIA's unique and robust College and Career Readiness department aids students in preparing themselves academically and mentally for college and university applications. Unlike many other schools where college consultation is a resource-based department, AAIA requires students to enroll in college and career exploratory courses from grade 9 through 12. AAIA also has a low counselor to student ratio of 1:20. AAIA students receive personalized, one-on-one guidance and support.
Community Services[edit]
Recognizing that learning takes place beyond the school campus, AAIA has implemented a Service Learning Graduation Requirement. In order to full-fill the requirements, high school students (Grade 9-12) are required to complete a minimum of eighty (80) hours community service of which forty (40) hours must be outside of school.
