Asiel Babastro Quesada (Morón, Ciego de Ávila, Cuba, September 12th, 1989) is a film director mainly known for his work with music videos, advertising and short films.

Biography

Babastro is a graduate of visual arts, majoring in painting.[1] He took film director workshops, drama and script writing at the Higher Institute of Arts (ISA) and at the International Film and Television School (EICTV),[2] he also has private collection exhibitions in countries like: Germany, USA, France and United Kingdom. Babastro's photographs have appeared on covers of magazines like Vivencias and Arbol Invertido, which also published several of his poems.[3] He is the author and creator of «Barrio Travieso», the identifying title of Morón.

Babastro started his work as an audiovisual producer and photographer in Ciego de Ávila. He made his debut in the music video industry with the production of the video clip: Te me has ido, from Jesse Suarez, filmed in Havana in 2012 and as a photographer in the independent film Solo Sombras.

Babastro has directed music videos for artists like: Waldo Mendoza, Divan, David Blanco, Adrian Berazain, Isis Flores, DECUBA, Oes 3, Chila Lynn, Haila, Arnaldo y su Talisman, SMS, Leoni Torres and others. It is also worth mentioning his work with the Buena Vista Social Club Diva, Omara Portuondo, singing a duet with the Mexican singer Lila Downs whom he filmed a video clip with the single Yo vengo a ofrecer mi corazon [1] from Fito Paez. The money saved from selling this video was used to help those injured by the Irma hurricane and the 2017 Mexican earthquake.[4]

In his work, Babastro raises his artistic knowledge in correspondence with the moment in which he lives. Babastro insists on a particular style; hence he prefers to carry on projects that allow him to reveal his creative freedom. He is interested in an alternative aesthetic and he suggests a speech that combines emotions and real facts.[5]

Babastro's productions are recognized from the very beginning as he managed to mark the difference by identifying each proposal as «An Asiel Babastro film». With this, Babastro assumes a great responsibility with his audience, as he himself has stated.[6]

Prizes and Awards

Babastro is known as part of the new generation of Cuban video clips directors,[7] and despite his youth has been awarded several times with an Lucas Award.[2] Babastro obtained several recognitions in the category of «Urban music», with the single Androides from the reggaeton music performer El Chacal[8] and in the «Best ballad video» category with the single Ángel from the romantic singer Waldo Mendoza and with Vuelos from the young music band DECUBA, he received the Lucas Award in the «Best pop rock video» category.

Other audio visual styles

Babastro has dabbled in other audiovisual styles such as documentaries, short films and films. He is also the creator and head of the Alternativo Art production company.[9] At present, he is working on filming a short film, while preparing two more films; one of them delves into Cuban independence wars taking into account his is a descendant of mambises, with this purpose he is intending to enter the world of the big screen art.
