Kapadia has been working in the film industry for 30 years in all aspects of the industry.
He started working on films as a runner at age 18, on numerous short films, feature films, commercials, and TV shows. He was a sound recordist, a first Assistant Director, an assistant editor, operated a camera, been a spark, and laid track. Wanting to make his films, he went to film school for 6 years, to Newport Film School, the University of Westminster (where he gained a 1st Class Degree), and the Royal College of Art; Kapadia’s short films went to film festivals, winning many awards, including The Sheep Thief winning an award at the Cannes film festival. Kapadia has written, directed, produced, and executive produced shorts, feature films, commercials, TV, fiction, documentaries, films in English, and films not in English. Kapadia runs his own successful production company, Lafcadia Productions.
Kapadia has been on the BAFTA film committee, Academy Awards documentary committee, BAFTA juries (directing, best debut film), Sundance jury, London Film Festival jury, and Gotham Awards jury. When previously on the BAFTA film committee, Kapadia pushed for a documentary award, but it didn’t exist. This is now one of the most exciting and diverse awards each year.
Kapadia has Won 4 BAFTAs and has been nominated 8 times for BAFTAs, including Outstanding British Film, Best Debut Film, Best Film Not in English, Best Documentary, and Best Editing. Kapadia has Won an Oscar, a Grammy, a European Film Award, and a Sundance Audeince Award. Kapadia had three films premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, three films premiere at the Venice Film Festival, and two films premiered at Sundance. Kapadia has Honorary Doctorates from the Royal College of Art, the University of Westminster, The National Film School, the London Film School, and The University of East London.
