Asim Kumar (born 3 February 1962) is an Indian politician and physician. He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and has been the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Tamkuhi Raj, a constituency in the Kushinagar district of Uttar Pradesh, since 2022.[1][2]

Early life and education
Asim Kumar was born on 3 February 1962. His father, Dr. Kirti Narayan Chowdhary (since deceased), was from Samastipur and completed his MBBS in 1960 from Darbhanga Medical College, going on to serve at various postings in the Bihar Health Services before retiring as a Civil Surgeon in 1990.
Because his father was posted to different rural areas as a Medical Officer, Asim Kumar's early schooling took place at various rural schools. He went on to study medicine, completing his MBBS at Darbhanga Medical College and later an MS in General Surgery. Per his 2022 election affidavit filed with the Election Commission of India, this postgraduate degree was completed at Ranchi University in 1995.1[3]
Medical career
Asim Kumar practised as a surgeon and, according to family-provided notes, established his own hospital in Gorakhpur around 2004, working as a minimally invasive surgeon. He is described as having been an active member of the National Medical Organisation (NMO) since his time in medical college.[4]
Political career
Kumar joined the BJP in 2012 and became active in the party's organisational structure at the zonal level, later serving as the coordinator of the party's Chikitsa Prakoshtha (Health Cell) for the Gorakhpur region — a role reflected in his own social media biography.2
In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election, Kumar (also recorded on the ballot as Asim Kumar Rai) contested from Tamkuhi Raj as the BJP candidate and won with 115,123 votes (50.81%), defeating sitting MLA and Congress leader Ajay Kumar Lallu by a margin of 66,472 votes.3 The seat had been held by the Indian National Congress since it was created in 2012.
He is a member of the 18th Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly.4[5][6]
