Asmaa Aouattah

Asmaa Aouattah is a Rifenian writer, equality agent, teacher and philosopher born on October 2, 1970, in Morocco and currently lives in Mataró, Spain.[1].

Aouattah has a Bachelor of Philosophy from Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University in Fes (Morocco)[2], a Master in Construction and Representation of Cultural Identities from the University of Barcelona[2], and Master in Equal Opportunity Agents from the University of Lleida[2].

She currently works as an equality agent in the Maresme County Council, in Mataró.[3]

As of 2020, she has published two books, a storybook and a poetry book. The two mostly starring the Rif and the stories and fights of its people.

Trajectory[edit]

Asmaa Aouattah began her writing career with the publication of her first book: L'Etern Retorn (Voliana Editions) in February 2018.

The success of the storybook (L'Etern Retorn) shocked its readers with phrases shared by Asmaa, "The damn migratory mourning does not let us embrace everything that this land offers us"[4]

In 2019 the author publishes Entre cendra i foc. Poemes dedicats al Moviment Popular Rifeny (Hirak Rif) with Neret Edicions[5] a poetry book that tells the stories of the victims of the militarization, colonization and oppression of the Rifenian people. The same book includes a full translation into Amazigh (Tifinagh) where the writer had to translate several poems from one language to another.[5]

Activism[edit]

In addition to being a writer and philologist, Aouattah is also an activist. During her youth she participated in various student social justice movements in Morocco and when he arrived in Catalonia she continued her fight. She co-founded Totes Plegades, a space for new female immigrants in the neighbourhood of Rocafonda, Mataró.[6] She is also part of the feminist, Catalan independentist and Rifenian movements.
