Asphalt Green Inc is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization[1] operating in New York City, focused on healthy lifestyles, sports and fitness. The organization was started in 1975 by Dr. George Murphy[2] with the goal of converting a retired municipal asphalt processing plant into a facility to serve the local area. It operates youth and adult sports programs from two facilities in Manhattan. Its most notable program is swimming/aquatics, and offers a variety of other indoor and outdoor sports to the community.[3]

Facilities[edit]

Upper East Side[edit]

Asphalt Green's original facility is located at Municipal Asphalt Plant (555 East 90th Street) in Manhattan's Upper East Side. In 1984, Asphalt Green began operations in the Murphy Center (named for founder Dr. & Mrs. George and Annette Murphy), housing a variety of gym and art studios, and a gymnastics center. In 1985, an adjoining outdoor turf field opened. In 1993, the Aquacenter opened, which included a swimming pool and additional fitness center facilities.

Battery Park[edit]

In 2013, Asphalt Green expanded to a second location in Battery Park City (212 North End Avenue), lower Manhattan. The facility also includes a swimming pool, fitness center, and an outdoor turf field.[4]
