The Association for Intelligent Information Management (AIIM), formerly the Association for Information and Image Management, is a global nonprofit professional association that provides education, market research, standards development, and certification for information management professionals. Founded in the 1940s as the National Microfilm Association, the organization is credited with coining the term enterprise content management (ECM) in 2000, and formerly served as the secretariat for the International Organization for Standardization technical committee responsible for document management standards, including the PDF/A and PDF/UA file formats.[1][2][3]
History
Founding and microfilm era (1940s–1982)
AIIM traces its origins to a meeting of microfilm companies held at the Essex House in New York City on July 28, 1944, at which four companies — representing roughly a dozen more — voted to establish a trade association.[4] The organization was incorporated in the state of Michigan in 1945 as the National Microfilm Association (NMA).[4] The association has traditionally cited 1943 as its founding year, though it has acknowledged that surviving records support several candidate dates, with its articles of incorporation dated 1945.[5]
As microfilm technology evolved, the association renamed itself the National Micrographics Association in 1975.[6] During the following decades its annual conference and trade show grew into major industry events, with the conference peaking at more than 2,500 attendees and the trade show at more than 30,000 attendees in the mid-1990s.[7]
Information and image management (1982–2018)
In 1982, reflecting the industry's shift from microfilm toward electronic document management, the organization adopted the name Association for Information and Image Management.[8][2] The association's historical records from this period are held in the special collections of the University of Michigan.[8]
In 2000, AIIM coined the term enterprise content management (ECM), defining it as the strategies, methods, and tools used to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content and documents related to organizational processes.[1] The term became the standard designation for the document and content management software market, and AIIM described itself during this period as "The Enterprise Content Management Association."[2] AIIM sold its conference and exposition business in 2002, shifting its focus toward education, research, and standards.[9] It launched its first training course, ECM Master Class, in 2006, and introduced the Certified Information Professional (CIP) certification in 2011.[6] A relaunched AIIM Conference debuted in 2012.[6]
In 2017, following a widely discussed Gartner analysis titled "The Death of ECM and Birth of Content Services," AIIM leadership publicly agreed that ECM as a market category had run its course and began repositioning the field around the concept of intelligent information management.[10]
Intelligent information management (2018–present)
In 2018, the organization rebranded as the Association for Intelligent Information Management, retaining the AIIM acronym, to reflect the growing role of artificial intelligence, automation, and analytics in managing organizational information.[8] Its research and education programs subsequently expanded to cover AI governance, information readiness for AI systems, and unstructured data management.[11]
Standards development
For several decades AIIM was an American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards developer in the document management field.[3] It held the secretariat of ISO/TC 171 (Document Management Applications) and administered the U.S. Technical Advisory Group to that committee.[3][12] In this capacity, AIIM co-developed several international document format standards jointly with the standards body NPES, including PDF/A for long-term archiving and PDF/UA (ANSI/AIIM/ISO 14289) for accessible documents.[13][14] AIIM hosted the PDF standards activity from the early 2000s through 2017, after which responsibility for the ISO/TC 171 SC 2 secretariat and the related U.S. Technical Advisory Group passed to the PDF Association, formalized in 2020.[14][15]
Leadership
AIIM's chief staff executives have included:
- Sue Wolk, executive director through the microfilm-to-document transition era, credited with guiding the association's repositioning from the "microfilm" business to the "document" business, until the mid-1990s.[7]
- John Mancini, president from 1996 to 2016, who led the association through the coinage of ECM and the shift to digital-era education and research. Mancini became Chief Evangelist in 2016 and later founded the advisory firm Content Results, LLC.[9][16]
- Peggy Winton, a 14-year AIIM executive who served as chief operating officer before being named interim president in June 2016 and subsequently president and CEO, serving until 2022.[9][17]
- Tori Miller Liu, appointed chief executive officer effective December 1, 2022. Liu previously served as chief information officer of the American Speech–Language–Hearing Association and is a Fellow of the American Society of Association Executives (FASAE), a Certified Association Executive, and a Certified Information Professional.[17][18]
Board of directors
AIIM is governed by a volunteer board of directors drawn from information management practitioners, solution providers, and end-user organizations. For 2026, the board's officers are Jason Cassidy of Shinydocs as Board Chair, Chris McNulty of Synozur as Vice Chair and Chair-Elect, and Candace McCabe of Walmart as Treasurer.[19]
Activities
AIIM provides industry market research, training courses, webinars, and publications for information management professionals, and administers the Certified Information Professional certification, first launched in 2011 and updated in 2016. By 2017, the association reported having trained more than 60,000 students and certified more than 1,500 information professionals.[6] It also operates an executive leadership council whose findings are published as industry trend reports.[6]
