The Missionary Lutheran Church was the successor to the defunct Association of Independent Evangelical Lutheran Churches (AIELC) that was a church of the Augsburg Confession founded in 1988 and incorporated in the state of New York on May 8, 2001. It was founded by The Rev. Dr. Pedro Bravo-Guzmán, The Rev. Peter Paul Brennan, and The Rev. Francis C. Spataro.

On November 10, 2019, an attempt to reestablish the AIELC by remaining clergy following the death of Bravo-Guzmán included the removal of all existing bishops. The attempt at reestablishment never fully materialized due to the disarray following Bravo-Guzmán’s death.

Records were lost and never located according to several former administrative staff members (former Secretary Christine Dobush and former Presiding Bishop and founding minister, Francis Spataro) who stated that the AIELC "is defunct and no longer exists." The Missionary Church, unfortunately, followed suit.
