The Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) is an international professional association for information professionals specializing in primary and secondary research, marketing and communications, information management and technology, training and consulting, and writing and editing.

History

The Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) was founded in 1987 in the United States by a group of independent information professionals (then more commonly known as information brokers) led by Marilyn Levine, a professor of library and information science at the University of Wisconsin.[1]:10 Levine, along with other librarians and entrepreneurs, more and more realized that independent information services were viable, especially as personal computers became much more common.[2] Thus, Levine and 25 other information professionals met in Milwaukee in 1987 to make an association for networking and to support information entrepreneurs. AIIP has since grown worldwide to have members in more than 20 countries.[3]

AIIP adopted its Code of Ethical Business Practice in 1989, last revised in 2002, and its members deem it to be a critical base of the information profession.[4][5]:17[6]:291

Membership

Members are generally solo practitioners and small business entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs and students.[7] Library schools,[8] business schools,[9]:13 and business books often list AIIP as a key professional resource.

Members specialize in many different aspects of the information profession.[10] These include:

From an industry standpoint, many members are generalists. Some members focus on specific industries such as healthcare, legal research, finance, and insurance, consumer packaged goods and retail, transportation, manufacturing, government, media, and advertising.[11]

Activities

AIIP's activities include its webinars, virtual meetups, local events, a mentor program, a quarterly internal publication (AIIP Connections), the Accountability Buddies program, and a members-only e-mail discussion list[12][13]:10. Former AIIP president Crystal Sharp and LIS writer Kim Dority deem the mailing list to be a great asset, “perhaps the most valuable learning tool available for independents,” in the words of Dority. On it, members share experiences, best practices, product recommendations, research tips, and advice on how to run an info pro business.[14]:9[15]:125.

Webinars and virtual meetups focus on topics related to building and running a business. Members lead many webinars themselves, and share their knowledge; vendor partners (such as LexisNexis and ProQuest Dialog) lead others, imparting knowledge about their products.[16]

Likewise, the AIIP members use the AIIP Annual Conference to network and partner, learn about vendors, and hone information professional skills and business management[17][18]:10. The AIIP 2017 Annual Conference took place in New Orleans. The AIIP 2018 Annual Conference was held 19-22 April 2018 in Minneapolis. The AIIP 2019 Annual Conference happened 11-14 April 2019 in Philadelphia. The AIIP 2020 Annual Conference will happen 23-26 April 2020 in Denver.

Awards

AIIP, like other akin organizations, recognizes the contributions of its members with sundry awards.
