Astoria Characters

'Astoria Characters[1] is a weekly blog about the people who live in Astoria, Queens, New York City. The blog, which was started in September 2009, ran in The Huff Post[2] until January 2018. In August 2016, it also began running in the weekly newspaper, the Long Island City/Astoria Journal and in AstoriaCharacters.com. The blog led to the establishment of Astoria Characters Day[3], a celebration of the talents of local residents. The first event, held in September 2017, attracted about 200 people. The second event, in September 2018, also was attended by 200 people. Astoria Characters is written by Nancy A. Ruhling, a New York City journalist and author who has had bylines[4] in more than 50 online and print publications, including The New York Times.[5]
