The Asura; originally referring to a demon or demi-god in Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism; has become a standard character type in Western and Japanese literature and popular culture. The following are some examples:

Books and comics[edit]

  • In Asura: Undead War, the Asuras are responsible for raising the dead and command an army of demon spawn.
  • In the manga and anime series Kinnikuman, the character Asuraman is the Prince of the Demon Realm and series villain.
  • "Asura" is a powerful attack performed by Zoro in the manga and anime series One Piece, in which creates an illusion of himself with nine swords and three heads.
  • In the manga and anime series Toriko, the intimidation technique performed by the character Mansam takes the form of an Asura. One of the animals in the Gourmet World is also called the "Asura Tiger" due to having three heads.
  • The Asura are a warrior caste native to the Land of Asura (修羅の国, Shura no Kuni), an island located near China in the manga and anime series Fist of the North Star and its sequel, Fist of the Blue Sky.
  • The main antagonist of the manga and anime Soul Eater is named Kishin Asura.
  • Asura is the name of a deity in Robert E. Howard's Hyborian Age stories of Conan the Cimmerian.
  • Asura is a prominent character in the manga and anime series Naruto.
  • In Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry, the protagonist Ikki Kurogane uses an attack called "Ittō Shura" (一刀修羅, lit "One-Blade Asura").
  • The Dragon Ball series features a fighter named "Shula", named after the Asura.
