Ateo Breaking — independent online news source. It specializes in short operational news messages, some of which are sent by readers. Founders: Grigory Ozerov and Robert Petrosyan. It includes Telegram and YouTube channels, as well as pages on Instagram, TikTok, and X.
According to the founders, the Ateo project (from Spanish "ateo" meaning atheism) was created in 2013 as a science popularization community on VKontakte, which also covered various social issues. In 2019, at the initiative of Robert Petrosyan, the Ateo Breaking Telegram channel was created, where short urgent news messages were published.
History
In 2020, during the Second Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the project published exclusive information about the conflict, including testimonies of Syrian mercenaries' participation on the side of Azerbaijan and Turkey, which was later confirmed by BBC journalists.
In 2021, the project was the first among Russian-language media to draw attention to the decree of French Prime Minister Jean Castex granting French citizenship[1] to Russian businessman Pavel Durov.
On February 24, 2022, the publication spoke out against Russia's attack on Ukraine and published exclusive footage of strikes on Ukrainian territory.
On December 20, 2022, screenshots of messages from Yandex's PR service employees were published[2] on the Ateo Breaking Telegram channel, offering payment for posting critical posts about the Yandex.Eda couriers' strike. Articles with similar content had previously been published in several media outlets, including TASS and Kommersant Pravda. The 5-day strike was organized by the Courier union, with about 3800 employees participating in 15 cities. As explained by strike participants and union representatives, the reasons were low pay, fines, and harsh working conditions.
In 2023, Ateo Breaking administrators filed[3] a complaint with the Russian Federation's General Prosecutor's Office and the Presidential Administration against Chechnya's leader Ramzan Kadyrov. The reason was the beating of Nikita Zhuravel (who was in custody on charges of insulting believers' feelings and hooliganism) by Kadyrov's younger son, Adam. At that time, Adam was 15 years old. The Presidential Administration rejected the complaint, stating that the RF President "has no authority to check prosecutorial decisions and compel the investigation of citizens' appeals."
On November 17, 2025, Ateo Breaking reported on the ban of Russian designer and blogger Artemiy Lebedev's entry into Armenia[4].
In November 2025, the channel[5] received WhatsApp verification.
Persecution
On March 26, 2022, the RF General Prosecutor's Office demanded to block the Ateo community on VKontakte in Russia[6]. Subsequently, blocked media outlets in Russia, including Ateo Breaking, sued Roskomnadzor and the RF General Prosecutor's Office.
On May 17, 2022, Meduza reported[7] that the headline of one of Ateo Breaking's Telegram posts became the reason for initiating a criminal case for "spreading fakes about the army." A 17-year-old teenager from Novosibirsk reposted Ateo Breaking's message in an opposition chat: "Seized nuclear power plants are controlled by Kadyrovites. They killed the employees monitoring atomic safety. Terrorist groups seized the atomic facilities — Podolyak" text. He then became a defendant under Part 1 of Article 207.3 of the RF Criminal Code.
In October 2022, a Chechen court banned Ateo in the Chechen Republic.
On October 18, 2024, the RF Ministry of Justice registered[8][9] the Ateo Breaking project as a foreign agent.
