Susan Kuhnhausen (b. 1955)[1][2] is known for surviving an attack by a hitman.[1][4][5][3]

Biography[edit]

On September 6, 2006, nurse Susan Kuhnhausen returned home to encounter Edward Dalton Haffey attacking her with a claw hammer. She wrestled the weapon away, was bitten and suffered blows by her attacker, and finally returned blows with the weapon before wrestling him into a chokehold.[1][3] The two struggled for some time, with Kuhnhausen demanding to know who had sent the attacker.[3][4] The attacker died of the chokehold,[1][4] and police later discovered that Kuhnhausen's husband had hired the attacker to kill her for a payment of $50,000.[4]

The police found no signs of forced entry, which was explained by the fact that Kuhnhausen's estranged husband still had the security codes for the home's alarm system.[5][1]

Kuhnhausen's husband plead guilty to solicitation of murder and received seven years of prison time,[3] and later died while in prison of natural causes.[6] The attacker, Haffey, who died at the scene, had a nearly-lethal dose of cocaine in his system at the time of his autopsy.[3][7] Kuhnhausen was not criminally investigated for Haffey's death as it was deemed by the police to have been self-defense.[1][5]
