Aubrey Rogers (August 27, 1926 - March 10, 2010), the former sheriff of Collier County, supported neighborhood juvenile programs. In 1977, he established the Collier County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) children's Relations program, dispatching deputies to schools to assist children. Rogers, age 31 in 1957, moved to Naples from Fort Myers on August 27, 1926. Early influences on his law enforcement career were his great-uncle, a U.S. Marshal, and the father of his best friend.

Early Life[edit]

On August 27, 1926, Rogers was born in Fort Myers, Florida. Rogers' first thoughts about a future in the police force appeared while he was still a sophomore in high school. When he was a kid, he had an uncle who was a United States Marshal, and the father of his best friend was a law enforcement officer. They had a significant impact on his decision to pursue a career in law enforcement,[3] and as a result, in 1948, when he was 22 years old, he began working for the Fort Myers Police Department, which at the time consisted of only a few policemen.

Enlistment[edit]

Rogers, with whom the then-Collier County Sheriff E. A. Doug Hendry had worked together previously at the Fort Myers Police Department, was hired by Hendry to work at the Everglades jail in the year 1957.

Rogers started his job with the CCSO as a deputy and earned 74 cents an hour when he first started out. In the end, Sheriff Hendry promoted him to the position of chief deputy.

Rogers was appointed sheriff of Collier County on November 19, 1975, succeeding Hendry, who had resigned from the position. The appointment was made by Reuben Askew, who was serving as governor of Florida at the time.

Rogers was a Democrat in what was primarily a Republican county and served as an official there for a total of 13 years. Don Hunter, who had been his chief deputy before, won the election for sheriff in 1988 and took over the position.

During his time in office, Sheriff Rogers was able to steer the Collier County Sheriff's Office through a period of phenomenal expansion without problem. The only way that Sheriff Rogers could handle the expanding population of Collier County was to establish an agency that expanded at the same rate as the county itself.

During his tenure as leader of the department, Sheriff Rogers exemplified a singular combination of anti-crime efforts and volunteer work within the community. While simultaneously building an agency-wide focus on community and youth services, he was successful in his fight against moonshiners and the "cocaine cowboys"[4] of Miami. In essence, Sheriff Rogers paved the way for the innovative law enforcement organization that we have today by laying the framework for it.

Retirement and Death[edit]

Don Hunter, who had been his chief deputy before, won the election for sheriff in 1988 and took over the position. The Meritorious Service Award was presented to him after he retired from his position. On March 10, 2010, he passed away at the age of 83.

On the day of Aubrey Rogers' passing, as well as for the next two days, the flags at the Collier Country Sheriff's Office flew at a half-staff position, and the deputies wore black stripes on their badges to pay tribute to both Rogers and Leroy Rahmings, a community service deputy who had been killed in a car accident the previous Monday. Aubrey Rogers High School is the newest school to open in Collier in the past 19 years, which is located in North Naples, Florida.
