Audrey Grace Bennett is a naturalized American design scholar. She is a 2019 University Diversity and Social Transformation Professor at the University of Michigan . She is known for her work in cross-cultural, visual communication design research and history and her transdisciplinary contributions to the disciplines of ethnocomputing, food, and health.
Early life and education
Bennett was born in Nassau, The Bahamas and lived there until she was three years old when her family moved to Kingston, Jamaica. At age six, her family moved to East Orange, New Jersey where she lived through high school. After attending Dartmouth College and Yale University's School of Art, she moved to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as an assistant professor in 1987 and was subsequently promoted to full professor. In 2018, she joined the faculty at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor as full professor with tenure in the Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design, with a joint appointment in the Department of Communication and Media in the School of Literature, Science and the Arts.[1] In 2019 she was named as one of the Unviersity of Social Design Professors at the University of Michigan.[2]
Work
Bennett is celebrated for her innovative contributions to graphic design history, particularly her work with heritage algorithms and bringing to the forefront the African roots of Swiss design [3] She collaborated with Ron Eglash on the development of the award-winning Quilting CSDT [4] and Cornrow Curves CSDT[5], which merge Indigenous practices with modern design techniques to diversify STEM/STEAM.

Honors and awards
In 2015 Bennett was named an Andrew W. Mellon Distinguished Scholar, which she spent at the University of Pretoria.[10] Bennett received the American Institute of Graphic Arts Steven Heller Prize for Cultural Commentary in 2022.[11]
