Biography
He was the son of a merchant captain from Marseille. After learning Arabic, he became an interpreter in Mogador, Tangier, Tunis and Rabat in 1847. He was appointed consul at Mogador in 1865 and served there until his death.
Exploring regions under the authority of the sultan, he travelled on horseback along the Atlantic coast from Tétouan to Mogador. In 1868, accompanied by his wife, Jeanne Pingot, he travelled from Mogador to Marrakesh, returning via Safi.
He prepared reports, itineraries and maps of his journeys, which he sent to the Geographical Society.
He also produced numerous translations of historical and literary works in Arabic.
