Aurora Private School (officially Curro Aurora) is a private preschool, primary school and high school in Sundowner, Randburg, South Africa. It takes children from 2.5 years old to Grade 12 where matriculation examinations are taken through the Independent Examinations Board.[1] It was established in 1993 as a progressive school but was acquired by Curro Independent School in 2010.[citation needed]

History and Campus

Aurora was founded in 1993 by Wendy Benbow-Hebbert, Debbie Adam and Judy Nicholas. At this time the school was notable for its distinctly liberal approach to education in comparison to traditional private schools, specifically pupil governance and supervision. This included a minimal and relaxed uniform, no school bells and a high degree of autonomy afforded to pupils in undertaking their studies. The original school houses were Armstrong (red), Aldrin (green) and Collins (white).

The school's first physical campus of its own was located on Sysie Road in Randpark Ridge and known as TV Park. TV Park has been the site of subsequent schools including Willow Ridge Private School and Orion College.

Aurora moved to its present specifically built campus in 1998. The campus is on Taurus Road and chiefly accessed from Puttick Road. It comprises of individually enclosed circular buildings, named after planets in the Solar System, around the original hall. Prior to Curro's acquisition the Mercury complex housed grade 0 (grade R), the Venus building housed grades 1–3, the Mars building housed grades 4–6, the Jupiter building housed grades 7–9, and the Saturn complex housed grades 10-12. Preschool and aftercare facilities operated in a complex called Solaria. Later additions have sought to continue with the theme and include the Neptune and Newton buildings.

The campus is flanked by two sporting grounds called Galaxy Park to the west and Dream Park to the east. The Luna piazza serves as the school quadrangle. The school has centers for aquatics, music and dance. The current school hall adjacent to Galaxy Park was built in 2018.
